Your Equine portrait experience

Eeeeek! How exciting is this!


Your photoshoot is all about capturing the relationship between you and your horse in a relaxed, natural and beautiful way.

You don’t need to know how to pose, your horse doesn’t need to stand perfectly still, and you definitely don’t need to worry about everything going exactly to plan.

I’ll guide you throughout the whole session and work with whatever your horse gives us on the day.

This guide covers everything you need to know beforehand, so all you need to do is get excited!

What to wear

Probably the most common question I get before booking a shoot is... 'I don't know what to wear!!!'

For me, the most important thing is, is that you feel confident and comfortable in whatever you choose.

I usually recommend simple colours if you're looking to achieve the timeless, classy look from your photos.

There are certain colours that photograph particularly well...

✅ Creams/Beige

✅ Caramel/Brown

✅ White

✅ Olive

✅ Sage

✅ Soft blues

✅ Navy

✅Burgundy


There are also things I would recommend AVOIDING...

❌ Large logos

❌ Neon/very bright colours

❌ Extremely busy patterns

❌ Very fine stripes

❌ Anything you don't feel comfortable in

Your full photoshoot gives us plenty of time for variety.

Classic & Casual

Jeans, boots and a simple blouse, shirt or knit.

Equestrian

Breeches, riding boots, a fitted knit, shirt or jacket.

A Little More Special

A flowing dress or skirt can look beautiful for softer, more romantic images.


preparing your horse

THE DAY BEFORE:

I'd highly recommend prepping almost as though you're going to a show! Bathing your horse and cleaning your tack (if applicable!)

Perhaps even give their mane/tail a tidy.


THE DAY OF:

  • Have your favourite headcollar (or bridle!) ready
  • Give your horse a thorough groom and perhaps a spot clean (especially if grey!)
  • Wipe around their eyes/mouth


I'd highly recommend having a friend or family member that is horse savvy there on the day of your photoshoot. This will be very useful in particular for getting your horses ears forward. If this isn't possible, please let me know and I may be able to arrange some help.




What happens on the day?

Your full portrait session will last around 2 hours.

Two hours may sound like a long time, but don't worry - it won't be constant posing. This allows ample time for outfit changes, horse snacks and even the occasional equine tantrum.

The aim is for the whole experience to feel relaxed and enjoyable.


1 - I arrive

When I arrive, we’ll have a quick chat, I’ll meet your horse and we’ll have a look around the location together.

We can decide which areas will photograph best and talk through any particular images you’d love to create.


2 - Photoshoot begins

Throughout the session, we can capture a mixture of:

  • Portraits of you and your horse together
  • Natural, candid moments
  • Walking photographs (towards/away from camera)
  • Close-up details
  • Portraits of your horse alone
  • Different locations
  • Outfit changes
  • Tack or ridden photographs if planned


3 - Photoshoot comes to an end

I never time photoshoots - they naturally come to an end. When I feel we have captured enough photographs together, I will let you know, and the photoshoot will end.


after the shoot

 

After the session, I’ll carefully select the strongest photographs from your shoot and individually edit them in my signature style. All images are sent in full quality resolution.

You’ll then receive your own private online gallery.

The Gold Standard package includes a 20-30 second edited reel - perfect for sharing on social media as a sneak peek to your photoshoot! I aim to have this sent to you within 24 hours of your photoshoot.

Your full gallery will be available for viewing within 3 weeks of your photoshoot.


You’ll be able to choose your favourite ten photographs from your final gallery. And if narrowing it down to ten proves impossible…

Don’t worry.

You’ll also have the option to upgrade your collection.

FAQ

'BUT!! I'm AWKWARD IN PHOTOS!!'

Almost everyone tells me this.

You do not need to know how to pose.

I’ll guide you throughout the session - where to stand, where to look, what to do with your hands and how to position yourself with your horse.

And often, my favourite photographs are the little moments that happen in between...

A laugh.

A cuddle.

A nose nudge.

The moments that actually feel like the two of you.

 

'WHAT IF IT RAINS?'

 

Horse photography and the British weather don’t always cooperate!

I’ll keep an eye on the forecast before your session. If conditions are unsuitable, we can discuss rearranging your shoot.

 

'can the rest of my family get involved?'

 

Absolutely! The Gold Standard Photoshoot is literally what it says on the tin - there's no limitations with who can get involved. I love it when partners, dogs, family members etc get involved.

 

'wHAT IF MY HORSE MISBEHAVES?'

 

Please don’t worry.

I work around horses being horses. We’ll take our time, change approach if necessary and give them breaks whenever they need them.
